Sunday Salon Series

May 11th Spiritland

Join me for the latest in my salon series focusing on themes from my book Chinese And Any Other Asian:

Performing identity: ESEA exclusion and inclusion in film, theatre & TV

Over the year I will holding a series of salons on Sunday mornings exploring topics around identity of people from East and South East heritages, cultures and places of origin. In the true sense of the salon idea there will be space for conversation and exchange of knowledge. Beginning with a panel discussion with experts on the topics focused on.

Sunday 11 May, at 11am - TICKETS

Anna Sulan Masing

writer. poet. academic.

I began writing to tell stories through theatre, which grew into a writing career, a PhD and developing projects around food and creating communities. I explore identity and belonging in my work, and focus on how to create sustainable futures. Food and drink are often a focus and a way into discussing the difficult topics such as gender, race, colonialism, power and privilege.

Chinese And Any Other Asian

On many forms in the UK where ethnicity needs to be ticked, the space for East and South East Asia is 'Chinese’ or ‘Any Other Asian'. This represents a shameful sweeping together of a vastly varied heritage and experience. ESEA people have lived and worked in the UK for centuries, and yet this influence is often overlooked, and even ignored.

The same goes for the unique form of racism experienced by people of ESEA heritage. ESEA women are exoticized and sexualised, Asian food is mocked as unhealthy and our restaurants as dirty, our culture is appropriated, we are assumed to be the nanny of our mixed-race children, and we were blamed for the Covid-19 pandemic.

Taste of Place

Taste of Place is a Whetstone Radio Collective podcast hosted by Dr Anna Sulan Masing that explores colonialism, traces trade routes, meets pepper farmers, discovers spice molecules and delves into the mysteries of perfume. A narrative podcast that aims to untangle our understanding of the past and investigate our relationship with nostalgia, with the taste of pepper as the thread.

Books I have essays or chapters in.
